ATHENS PLAYER IS RULED OUT FOR THIS YEAR
LONGVIEW - The Athens Hornets pennant balloon encountered a choppy course Saturday which damage it to a large extent. Richard Shinn, one of the outstanding members of the team, was ruled ineligible by the executive committee of district 6, inter scholastic league, at a meeting here Saturday Morning.

A record by Roy B. Henderson's office showed that Shinn had played in 1924. As the record was not signed, the matter was put to the committee for vote. Marshall, Tyler, Palestine, Texarkana and Lufkin voted for ineligibility and Nacogdoches did not vote. Athens casted the only vote for Shinn's eligibility.

A sharp verbal clash occurred between representatives of the various towns, with Athens claiming it was receiving a "raw" deal. This and other statements by Athens were later withdrawn and the meeting ended in harmony.

The committee voted that the games should be kept for five yards back, that every school should send the various schools in the district a complete record of the credits each player has, and to allow the superintendents to decide whether rural students should be given credit for enough work to make him pass in three subjects for the preceding year.

There was lengthy discussion as to the eligibility of rural students who enter high school before the matter was left up to the superintendents.

The meeting was attended by Henry W. Stillwell of Texarkana, president and a representation from the other six other towns in the district..

LONGVIEW - Athens high school barely eked out a 6-0 victory over the Longview Loboes here Thursday afternoon in the opening clash of the season for the two elevens in the feature event of the third day of the Longview fair.

Although the Hornets made seven first downs to the Loboes one, the Henderson county aggregation took advantage of a 30-yard pass tome their only counter.

The marker came int he third period after the two teams had battled to a 0 to 0 tie in the first half. Longview failed to make first down when only two yards was necessary and the ball went over to Athens on the Loboes' twenty-seven yard line. Only two plays were necessary to make the tally. A pass, Rowan to Rowland, for the extra point failed.

After this marker had been chalked up, neither team again threatened, but both elevens fighting up and down for possession of the ball. The contest ended with the pigskin in midfield.

Longview had a chance to take the lead in the second period but failed to make first down on the thirteenth yard line, which later proved to be the three yard marker. The Loboes, with the aid of J.Mills, James and Reese, had worked the ball down into the enemy's territory only to lose the pigskin on a fumble.

An attempted punt by Shinn was blocked by J. Mills and the Lobos started a serious threat inside the twenty yard chalk. This march, however, as halted after four downs and Athens kicked to safe territory.

After this time, the Longview team never again threatened, the series of attempted passes at the final stages of the game going wild.

Athens failed to present as strong a team as was expected. The eleven, it was known, had several backfield stars missing and depended upon Richard Shinn, fullback, for all gains.

A 15-yard-old halfback, however, paved the way for the victory. George Pedigrew, playing his first game with the regulars, was the greater ground gainer of the opposition. Pedigrew went more than 130 yards through the Loboes light line. Athens line, weighing 160 pounds, was penetrated several times but to no great advantage.

Being on the defense a majority of the time, and holding the Hornets from scoring distances was the trouble experienced by the local eleven. They held Richard Shinn and Pedigrew, and Boon and Hawn for very little gains. There was no excitement during the clash.

Four of the Hornets first downs came in the first half but proved to no advantage. Longview's only ten yard gain also was in the first period but it was in midfield and could be of no gain.

Repeatedly Mills, Reese and James attempted to rip the line but to no advantage. Mills attempted a series but each went wild. Athens completed only four of nine attempted heaves.
