DEFENSE: LOBOS HOLD ON FOR 13-7 WIN OVER JACKRABBITS
FORNEY - A lot was at stake when a pair of top 10 teams in Texas and District 7-5A Division I mates Longview and Forney met at City Bank Stadium on Friday night, and the second-ranked Lobos used a last-minute red zone defensive stop to pull out a hard-fought 13-7 win against the 10th-ranked Jackrabbits.

The Lobos will bring an improved 5-1 season record and 3-0 district record to next Friday's 7:30 p.m. home district game against North Mesquite at Lobo Stadium, and join McKinney North atop the league standings.

The Jackrabbits averaged 58 points per game before Friday's seven-point performance, and dropped their respective marks to 5-1 and 2-1 before next Friday's 7 p.m. home league match against Lancaster.

Both offenses were limited throughout the game, but Longview drove to the red zone early in the second quarter. Kicker John Monsivais ultimately missed a 25-yard field goal attempt on that possession at the 9:38 mark of the period, but he later redeemed himself.

Lobo quarterback Andrew Tutt only completed one pass in the game, but he did find receiver Kelvin Washington on a 50-yard connection that set up Monsivais' successful 27-yard kick at the 6:33 mark of the period. Monsivais ultimately finished two-for-four on field goal attempts in the event.

Tutt eventually heated up on the ground when his five carries produced 66 rushing yards in the Longview win.

Longview then leaned on running back Taylor Tatum, and his four-yard touchdown run gave the Lobos a 10-0 advantage at the 3:13 mark of the quarter.

Tatum ultimately finished the outing with 31 carries for 183 rushing yards and a score on the ground.

Forney eventually woke up, and Jackrabbit quarterback Kyle Crawford connected with receiver Imari Jehiel on an 11-yard touchdown pass that cut Longview's lead to 10-7 with 22 seconds until the halftime break.

Crawford guided Forney with a 13-for-23 passing performance for 96 yards and a score, and Javian Osborne carried the ball 21 times for 68 rushing yards.

Monsivais kicked off the second half with a successful 23-yard field goal that grew Longview's lead to 13-7 at the 6:56 mark of the third quarter. He had an opportunity to give Longview a two-score advantage with 4:52 remaining in the fourth quarter, but his 18-yard field goal attempt was blocked and returned by Forney to the Jackrabbit 32-yard line.

Forney's offense was forced to punt on the next drive, but the Jackrabbits' special teams unit recovered Longview's muffed punt return at the Lobo 27-yard line.

The home team eventually moved to the seven-yard line, but the road team wrapped up the hard-fought victory when its defense sacked Crawford on fourth down with 38 seconds remaining.
