|LONGVIEW - A total team effort put the Lobos back in the win column Friday night in a pivotal District 15-5A matchup with Texas High.
Taking advantage of two early Tiger turnovers the Lobos responded to both with scores, building a 14-0 lead en route to a 35-14 win over Texas High at Lobo Stadium.
"It's been a long week, not a stressful one but one that will test you," Longview head coach John King said. "I thought they would come out and play hard. I'm proud of their effort tonight.
Longview moves to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in district action. The loss is the Tigers first since the a Week 3 setback to Kilgore and first blemish in 15-5A action.
D'Crayvan Polk, a week off a 225-yard night in the Lobos' loss the Marshall, totaled 145 yards and two scores to pace a 274 rushing night for the Lobos. Junior running back Kendrevian White found the end zone for the second time in as many games for Lobos.
Quarterback Michael Ross finished 5-of-8 passing for 105 yards and a touchdown pass. He added 45 yards on five carries, including a seven-yard score.
The Lobo defense held Texas High, which entered Friday night averaging 218 yards on the ground, to 52 total yards on 26 carries - two yards per tote.
Ameron Dean pulled down an interception, Ja'Quavion Faggans scooped up a fumble and Kybrin Sheridan notched a pair of sacks for the Lobo defense, which held the Tigers out of the end zone until late in the third quarter.
"Good team win tonight," King said. "I thought we played well on the offensive and defensive front. We were disruptive defensively and controlled the line offensively."
While the Tiger ground game failed to gain traction, junior quarterback Cade Pearson completed 23 of his 36 pass attempts for 274 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring strikes came on a 58-yard pass to Jaylen Rhone and a 34-yard pass to Sophomore receiver Tevailance Hunt.
Longview coughed up the ball on its third snap of the game. Texas High took the ball and marched but put its lone fumble of the night at the Lobo one-yard line.
Longview converted two third downs, highlighted by a 37-yard pickup from Ross to fullback Austin Moore on third-and-seven. Ross, with solid protection up front, capped the 99-yard drive with a nine-yard score to Jordan Wyatt.
Texas High entered Lobo territory again before Dean pulled down his second pick of the season and returned it 17 yards. Four play later, Polk was in the end zone on a 42-yard run.
The Lobo defense forced a Tiger turnover-on-downs.
Longview set up at its own 38 and flipped the field on a 30-yard completion from Ross to Jon Sorey. Polk put the Lobos up, 21-0, on his second touchdown of the night from 10 yards away at the 5:28 mark in 5:26 left in the second quarter.
Tylan Miller returned to the field briefly for the Lobos, taking a handoff for a three-yard carry on the Lobos' second possession on the second half. On the next snap, Ross faked a handoff to Miller and hit the edge for a seven-yard score.
Texas High got on the board with Pearson's first touchdown toss of the night with 1:58 left in the third quarter.
White capped an eight-play, 79-yard march with an eight-yard run. He converted a third-and-seven for the Lobos with a 27-yard run.
Texas High wrapped the scoring with a 34-yard toss from Pearson to Hunt with 3:58 left in the contest.
Longview travels to Mount Pleasant next. Texas High hosts Marshall, which moved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the district Friday night, next in Texarkana.
