MAVS BREAK STREAK, BEAT LOBOS 28-25
MARSHALL - Number 105 between Longview and Marshall lived up to the billing.

A vaunted Maverick offense did as well in front of a capacity crowd Friday night at Maverick Stadium, Marshall jumped ahead early and had an answer late to knock off Longview, 28-25, in a key District 15-5A matchup.

Marshall moves to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in district action with the win, the first for the Mavericks over the Lobos since 2000, snapping a 14-game streak in favor of the Lobos. Longview drops to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in district play.

Justin Hart got the contest going early and Cameron Haller put the finishing touches on it for the Mavericks.

The middle belonged to the Lobos, who erased a 21-13 deficit and staked its lone lead late in the third quarter.

"It was a game of missed opportunities," Longview head coach John King said. "We missed a few two-point conversions. We had a chance to grab their fumble and didn't and they took ours. Then they converted fourth-and-inches and a fourth-and-one.

"That's not taking anything away from Marshall. They're a good football team and a well-coached football team. You've just got to take advantage of those opportunities in a game like this."

Hart completed his first pass of the night on the first snap of the game for a 69-yard touchdown, sparking an 11-for-16, 317-yard, two-touchdown night for the four-year starting quarterback.

"He's a good quarterback and he's not a dink-and-dunk thrower either," King said. "I talked with him before the game just to tell him what a fine quarterback he's become. He took his lumps early and has matured into a good one."

Limited throughout the night, Haller put the Mavericks back on top with a four-yard score in the fourth quarter. He then rushed for 25 yards on a fourth-and-one with just over a minute to play to send the Mavericks into victory formation. Seventy-four of his 124 yards came in the fourth quarter.

D'Crayvan Polk turned in a career night for the Lobos, churning out 214 of the Lobos' 335 rushing yards. Junior Kendrevian White, making the move to offense for the first time this season, rushed for 63 yards on seven carries, including an 11-yard score. Cody Jenkins rounded out the Lobo scoring with field goals of 24 and 25 yards.

In total, Longview finished with 427 total yards. Marshall totaled 467.

Longview marched 70 yards on 14 plays, chewing up 5:30 off the game clock to open the third quarter with Polk's second score pulling the Lobos to 21-19 with a failed two-point pass.

The Lobo defense forced a Marshall three-and-out. Polk took the first four carries of the ensuing drive and White capped it with a 15-yard run before an 11-yard blast put the Lobos up for the first time, 25-21, with 1:26 left in the third quarter. The two-point pass attempt failed.

Marshall responded with two third down conversions before Haller's four-yard run put the Mavericks back on top, 28-25, a lead the Mavericks would not relinquish.

Marshall took 19 seconds to take advantage when Hart hit a wide-open Dabbs over the middle for a 69-yard score.

The Lobos went three-and-out on its first possession and the Lobo defense responded by forcing a turnover on downs at the Longview 29 yard line.

Ross hit Braggs for 47 yards, followed by a 13-yard run from Polk, setting up a first-and-goal at the 10. Jenkins put the Lobos on the board with a 25-yard field goal.

After a three-and-out from Marshall, Longview set up at the Maverick 36 yard line. A dropped pass followed by an incompletion set up a 41-yard field goal attempt for the Lobos, which sailed wide left.

Marshall pushed its lead to 14-3 on a 14-play, 76-yard drive capped by a five-yard run from Haller. The drive was highlighted by a 33-yard screen pass pickup from Hart to Mills, who broke a pair of tackles on the scoring drive.

Longview's lone first half fumble came on the ensuing drive at the Maverick 25 yard line.

Marshall flipped the field quickly on an on-the-money pass and catch from Hart to Dabbs for 39 yards. A holding call then forced a Marshall punt.

Polk then ripped off an 80-yard run down the sidelines on the Lobos' first snap - the third-straight week with an 80-plus yard scoring run for the Lobos - to make it a 14-10 contest.

After picking up a quick first down, Hart threaded the needle over the middle to Patton, who took it 70 yards to paydirt for a 21-10 Marshall lead with 2:03 left in the first half.

After four consecutive first down pick ups, Longview converted a fourth down on a five-yard completion to Braggs. Moore's first carry then went for 19 yards to the Marshall 30. With time expiring, Jenkins connected on a 24-yard kick for a 21-13 Marshall lead at the break.

Longview plays host to Texas High next while Marshall travels to Greenville.
