| GREENVILLE - Longview jumped to a 14-0 lead on the first four plays of the night at T.A. 'Cotton' Ford Stadium.
That was enough for the Lobos to move to 2-0 in District 15-5A action with a 51-0 romp over Greenville on Friday night. With the quick lead, the Lobos weren't done offensively or defensively. "We had a couple of big plays there early that rocked them back a little bit," Longview head coach John King said. "We built the lead and played Lobo football from there on out." With heavy rotation both ways, the Lobos picked up 489 total yards while defensively pitching the first shutout since 2012 and holding Greenville (1-4, 0-2) to 173 total yards. "We played a lot of players tonight and the most important thing was getting them all in the game," King said. "They need those valuable, game-time reps right now and that's more valuable to me than a shutout. It's nice to have and I don't want to make light of that but I would've traded the shutout instead of not being about to get everyone out there." Quarterback Michael Ross finished the night, which ended for him after the Lobos' first series in the third quarter, on 8-of-17 passing for 191 yards and three touchdown passes. "He had a good night with good throws, good reads, good protection and good routes from the receivers," King said. "Overall, it was a good night in the passing game." Ross connected with tight end Jordan Wyatt twice for scores of 56 and 58 yards. Wyatt finished with three catches for 135 yards. On the season, five of the eight passing touchdowns have targeted tight ends. Chris Braggs rounded out the passing game with four catches for 61 yards, including a 21-yard score, his first of the season. With senior running back Tylan Miller not in action, Longview turned to five running backs on the ground. Leading the way was D'Crayvan Polk, who finished with 16 carries for 132 yards. Senior Braylynn Anthony touched the ball twice with both carries resulting in touchdowns on runs of 10 and 85 yards. On the season, Anthony has nine carries for 219 yards and three scores. Austin Moore totaled 33 yards and junior fullback Trajan Bush tacked on 25 yards, including a four-yard score. Miller, who is out with an apparent leg injury, is day-to-day, according to King. "All of them ran well and the fullbacks blocked well," King said. "Bush there late made some bone-crushing blocks and added a touchdown run. Those fullbacks are valuable and it's nice to throw them a bone. "We've got depth in the backfield and it's nice to see them step up tonight and play the way they did." On the third play from scrimmage, Ross hit Wyatt for 56 yards over the middle to put the Lobos ahead less than two minutes inside of the opening kickoff. After a quick three-and-out, highlighted by a tackle at the line from Sophomore Kyle Andrews, Ross connected again with Wyatt for a 58-yard score for the second connection in 1:48 off the game clock. Defensive lineman Trevor Allison had two back-to-back tackles to force Greenville's second-straight punt. Ross and Wyatt connected again on the Lobos ensuing possession for a 21-yard gain on a bootleg pass on 4th and 4. Jenkins drilled a 32-yard field goal to push Longview's lead to 17-0 with 54 seconds left in the opening quarter. Greenville picked up its initial first down on the following drive but was forced to punt for the second of nine times on the night. Longview tacked on two scores in the second quarter with Ross rounding out his night with a 21-yard scoring completion to Braggs. Anthony's first carry of the night then went for a 10-yard score, set up by a 60-yard run from Polk, for a 31-0 Longview lead at halftime. Jon Sorey scooped up a fumble and took it in as the Lobos marched in the third quarter for a 38-0 lead. Bush's four-yard blast pushed that margin to 45-0 at the end of the third quarter. After Longview's second penalty of the night at 11:02 in the fourth quarter pinned the Lobos at their own 15. Anthony took the ball on the outside, high stepped a tackle and burst for an 85-yard score, his second in as many weeks. Longview will now visit Marshall, which remained undefeated on the season with a 35-28 win over Pine Tree. |
