| TYLER - There was no late magic left for the Lobos on Saturday.
Trailing 16-0 early in the second quarter, Longview found a chance to walk away from Rose Stadium for with its second-straight, last-minute win. The furious comeback against a potent Mansfield Lake Ridge team came up just short as the Eagles knocked off Longview, 37-35, in a Class 5A, Division I, Region II area round. Lake Ridges advances to meet either West Mesquite or McKinney North in the next round. Longview's season comes to an end at 9-3 after bringing their 36th district title home and knocking off rival Lufkin in the bi-district round. Longview rattled off 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take its first of two leads in the contest. But each time, Lake Ridge had an answer. Jett Duffey threw for 415 yards in the win for Lake Ridge (8-4). The junior gunslinger had one touchdown pass and added two more on the ground for an Eagle team that scored on six of its 11 possessions. Running back Duke Carter, also a junior, added 128 rushing yards with a pair of touchdowns. "They're a potent team," Longview head coach John King said. "We weren't surprised, we knew coming in that we would have a hard time with Duffey. He's hard to bottle up and he's got good receivers, backs and a good scheme with what they do. "Tonight, he was good." For Longview, junior running back Tylan Miller found the endzone twice while constructing his eighth 100-yard game of the season. He finished with 152 yards with scores of 20 and 10 yards. Sophomore running back Traveion Webster added a 20-yard score and totaled 97 yards for the Lobos. Senior quarterback Dezmond Chumley rushed for a score and threw another to finish his three-year Lobo career with 73 scores. Baylor commit JaMycal Hasty added 97 yards of total offense. Antonio Carter caught two passes for 97 yards - including a 55-yard touchdown. Lake Ridge opened the contest with a seven-play, 75-yard march with Duffey calling his own number for a one-yard score. The Eagle defense answered with a quick three-and-out, setting up a 14-play, 59-yard march that ended with a 22-yard field goal from Taylor Lampe for a 10-0 Eagle lead. On the next drive, Lake Ridge's Demetrice Watson hauled in an interception, setting up an 11-play, 97-yard march - including a pair of third downconversions - with Duffey hitting Isaiah Jones to give Lake Ridge a 16-0 lead after Longview's Ameron Dean batted down the point-after attempt. The Eagles finished 12-for-17 on third down conversions. Then the Lobo offense came to life. A 36-yard run from Miller set up Chumley punching in the Lobos' first score from a yard away with 8:17 left in the second quarter. On the next play, Longview's Shaun Lloyd hauled an interception, setting the Lobos up at the Eagle 20. Miller then took the handoff to the house for Longview's second score in 23 seconds off the game clock. Lake Ridge went back to marching before Dean, a junior, pulled down his fifth interception of the year in the endzone. "We put together an offensive drive, got a turnover and turn around and get another one," King said. "We started doing what we do - run the ball effectively - and the kids started coming off the ball and picking up all the different twists and things they do." A 35-yard run from Hasty set up a 20-yard score by Webster to give Longview a 21-16 lead with 2:36 left in the opening half. Two third down conversions, and passes of 10 and 29 yards, sandwiched around a 10-yard keeper from Duffey had the Eagles in business. Carter scored from ayard away to give the Eagles back the lead, 23-21, at halftime. Miller had six carries on the Lobos' drive to open the half, the last resulting in a 10-yard score to make it 28-23 Longview with 9:06 left in the third. "He runs the ball hard, breaks a lot of tackles and has a good supporting cast around him," King said of Miller. "It's the yards after contact - that's the kind of back he is and he gave us that time and time again. The good thing about him is that he's coming back." Lake Ridge methodically went 75 yards, going 3-for-3 on third downs, with Duke Carter punching in his second score from nine yards away. After converting a third down, Longview was forced to punt, giving Lake Ridge the ball back at their own 28. Duffey scored for the second time on a nine-yard blast to make it 37-28. Both defenses went to work with consecutive punts and the Lobos held after a turnover to get the ball back with 3:41 to play. Webster rumbled for 22 yards before Chumley hit Antonio Carter for a 55-yard score, pulling the Lobos to within two points with 3:11 to play. The Lobo defense forced a punt and Longview set up at their own 37. Chumley hit Hasty for 10 yards then Carter for 24 to set up a 49-yard field goal attempt, which had the distance but narrowly missed to the left for the 37-35 final,ending the Lobos season. |
