COMEBACK FOR THE AGES: LOBOS WIN 43-42
TYLER - Sitting in the locker room at halftime, trailing 28-7, Longview head coach John King didn't have much to say.

He let his senior quarterback deliver the message to the Lobos.

"It was quiet," King said. "It couldn't be better said than what Dezmond Chumley wrote on the board, 'You can either play your hearts out or you can cry your hearts out,' and it was time to make a choice."

Behind a four-touchdown night from Chumley - plus a two-point conversion pass - Longview rallied from the four-score deficit to knock off rival Lufkin, 43-42, in a Class 5A, Division I, Region II bi-district showdown at Rose Stadium in Tyler.

Longview advances to the area round where they will meet Mansfield Lake Ridge at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22 back at Rose Stadium.

Chumley finished the night with 313 yards and four scores - 163 and four touchdowns coming in the second half.

"Stat-wise, I don't know if it was his best game but as far as making plays in key situations and making the right throws, it was by far his best game of his career," King said of the three-year starter.

Tylan Miller ran up 119 yards with two touchdowns and added a 10-yard touchdown catch.

JaMycal Hasty, in his second night of action this season, finished with 121 total yards - 90 on the ground and a 24-yard touchdown catch.

With fullback Marquies Hunter sidelined for the contest with an injury, the Lobos turned to their tight ends to bolster the ground attack. Their play in the passing game, however, made the biggest impact. Jordan Wyatt - who didn't have a catch entering the contest - hauled in five Chumley passes for 83 yards and a score, as well as the game-winning two-point conversion. Emmanuel Gordon caught two passes for 85 yards

"We did some things differently tonight, forced to for various reasons," King said. "I thought our offensive line did a good job to allow us to mix the run and the pass - forced them to load the box and we were able to mix in the play action and get it to them."

Two first-half turnovers, paired with a potent Lufkin offense, put Longview in a 28-0 hole with 4:12 left in the second quarter.

Chumley hit Wyatt for a 12-yard completion, followed by a 27-yard strike, setting up an eight-yard score to Gordon to put Longview on the board with 2:28 left in the half.

The Lobo defense held Lufkin to a punt and the Lobos drove the field on the next possession before the Panther defense stuffed a run at the one as time expired at the break.

Longview came out firing, going 75 yards on six plays with Chumley hitting Hasty on the sidelines for a 24-yard score.

Lufkin, again, had an answer. Steven Sowell, who finished with 202 yards on the night, found Demarrea Houston on a halfback pass for the touchdown, making it 35-14 with 6:17 left in the third stanza.

Chumley hit Wyatt for a 10-yard score on the next possession and the Lobo defense forced a quick three-and-out. Miller got on the board with a three-yard run to make it a one-possession game with 1:46 left in the third.

Lufkin then began to drive before pressure on Lufkin quarterback Trey Cumbie forced an errant throw - one that Lobo junior cornerback Ameron Dean elevated to pick off.

Longview went 88 yards on nine plays - sparked with a 54-yard run from Hasty - and capped with Miller's second score to knot it 35-35 with 3:34 left to play.

But again, it was Sowell and the Panthers. The senior back punched in his second rushing score - third overall - to put the contest back in Lufkin's favor with 3:34 to play.

Longview took the ball at their own 48 and Chumley made runs of six, three and two before Shaun Garrison hauled in tipped ball on third and six - the Lobos' second conversion of the night. Three plays later, on third down, Chumley hit Miller for a 10-yard score to make it 42-41.

The Lobo offense took the field and again turned to the flat - where it Wyatt was waiting to convert the two-point attempt, lifting the Lobos to the 43-42 win.
