LOBO GROUND ATTACK LEADS LOBOS TO 49-6 WIN
SULPHUR SPRINGS - Longview hit the road Friday night with a chance to lock up at least a share of its 36th district title in school history.

There's a part of the gold ball heading back to the Lobo Den and the Lobos sealed it up with another total-team win.

Behind a smashmouth ground attack, Longview jumped ahead early and sealed it with a solid defensive outing en route to a 49-6 win over Sulphur Springs at Gerald Prim Stadium.

"It was a big win tonight on the road," Longview head coach John King said. "We knew we would have our hands full, but our kids showed up and did some things to take control of the ballgame."

Longview, who moves to 7-2 overall and 6-0 in Distict 15-5A action, rolled up 406 yards on the ground. They were led by a workhorse effort from junior Tylan Miller, who finished with 189 yards - his sixth 100-yard effort this season.

"He's so hard to get on the ground and he broke a lot of tackles tonight and had some holes to run through" King said. "There were a lot of times where had a chunk of yards after contact and had a good supporting cast around him."

Dezmond Chumley added 33 yards on the ground with a pair of scores. He finished 5-for-9 for 115 yards and touchdown - pushing the senior back over the 1,000-yard mark for the third time in his career at the Lobo helm.

"He threw the ball and ran the ball well tonight," King said. "Going over 1,000 yards for the third time - that's definitely something to proud of and we're proud of him and his effort."

Marquies Hunter had four carries for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore D'Crayvan Polk added a three-yard score to give him 72 yards in the second half. Dezmein Dennis also had a one-yard touchdown for the Lobos.

Antonio Carter hauled in three catches for 51 yards. Jon Sorey added a 30-yard catch. Tight end Emmanuel Gordon was on the receiving end of Chumley's scoring strike for 22 yards - his first of the season - to boost his average to 25 yards per reception on the year.

Defensively, the Lobos held Sulphur Springs, which leads 15-5A in total offense, to a first-half shutout. Jakoryian Walker hauled in two interceptions, giving the senior defensive back five on the year. Junior Keenan Madded pulled down his fourth overall for the Lobos.

Chumley hit Carter for 17 yards on the first play of the game and capped the opening drive with an eight-yard run to put Longview ahead, 7-0, early in the contest - the eighth time the Lobos have opened with points.

The two teams exchanged punts before Walker hauled in his first interception with the Wildcats at the Lobo 33-yard line.

On Sulphur Springs' next possession, the Wildcats again maneuvered to the Lobo 33 before a four-yard tackle for loss from Omar French thwarted the drive, setting up a punt that rolled to the one-yard line.

Facing 99 yards of field in front of them, Longview used 12 plays and chewed up more than five minutes off the game clock. Miller had nine carries on the drive.Chumley hit Carter for 30 yards before punching in his second score of the night, putting Longview up 14-0.

The next series featured seven penalties between the two teams with Sulphur Spring electing to attempt a 45-yard field goal. Jaylon Jackson secured the turnover on downs with a tackle for loss following a bad snap on the attempt.

Miller had runs of seven, 12 and 17 on the Lobos' next drive before Hunter took a pitch from Chumley, broke a tackle with blocks from Sorey and Carter on his way to a 28-yard score to give Longview a 21-0 lead at the break.

Sulphur Springs took the ball to open the second and the Lobo defense quickly responded with a three-and-out with Karbohn McAdoo adding a five-yard tackle for loss on fourth down.

A 15-yard run from Miller set up Hunter's second score of the night from six yards away, moving the score to 28-0 in favor of the Lobos.

Another three-and-out put Longview at their own 32. Chumley found Sorey across the middle on a nice catch-and-throw for 30 yards setting up a 28-yard scoring strike to a wide-open Gordon for 22 yards.

Sulphur Springs conducted its scoring drive in the waning minutes of the third quarter on a 15-play, 66-yard march, capped with a two-yard score from quarterback Larry Pryor. The Texas A&M commit, who leads the district in passing and rushing, was held to 68 yards on the ground and 44 in the air.

Polk and Dennis added fourth-quarter scores for the 49-6 final.

The Lobos return home on Friday to cap the regular season with a showdown with Hallsville on senior night. Sulphur Springs (5-4, 4-2) visits Marshall.
