| LONGVIEW - It's been five years in the making.
The 'Battle of Longview' returned to Longview as the Lobos and Pirates renewed a rivalry that features just 13 meetings between the two schools, and the Lobos took control of early. Behind four first-half touchdowns from Dezmond Chumley, bolstered by the Mean Green defense, the Lobos jumped ahead early and rolled to a 66-13 win over Pine Tree in front of a jam-packed Pirate Stadium on Friday night. "Such a great turnout and atmosphere on both sides, just great fanbases in this city," Longview head coach John King said. "Renewing the cross-town rivalry ... it was just great for both schools. "Our kids fed off of that and we made some plays early on offensively and defensively and took control of the game." Most importantly for the Lobos, the big win marks a 1-0 start to District 15-5A action. "That was the main focus coming into the ballgame," King said. "Going 1-0 to start in district - the second season - is crucial because this is where you earn that playoff berth and, hopefully, that gold ball." A quick march to start the contest, followed by a pick-six and another long drive put the Lobos quickly ahead in the opening stanza. "We made enough plays early on to get them off the field - interception return, turnovers - all the things we needed to put us in scoring position," King said. Chumley broke off a 38-yard option run and Tylan Miller followed with a 14-yard run, setting up Chumley calling his own number on a one-yard score just 1:39 into the contest. Khalil Williams pulled down his second interception of the year on the Pirates' first drive and took it 32 yards to paydirt, putting the visiting Lobos ahead 14-0 at the 9:07 mark in the first quarter. Kybrin Sheridan notched his second tackle-for-loss on the Pirates' third possession, forcing a punt. Chumley found tight end Emmanuel Gordon for 55 yards, Miller followed with a 10-yard gain and fullback Marquies Hunter's one-yard blast put Longview (2-2, 1-0) up 21-0 after the first quarter. Pine Tree athlete Mason Hays threw his lone pass of the contest on the opening drive of the second quarter before junior quarterback Daniel Bonamy found Hays for a 53-yard catch-and-run score to put Pine Tree on the board. Miller had added another 10-yard run before Chumley found him wide open for a 51-yard touchdown. The Lobo defense - led by Sheridan and Karbohn McAdoo up front - then forced a turnover on downs at the Lobo 37. Hunter broke a pair of tackles for a 29-yard gain before Chumley fired his second-straight touchdown pass to junior Jon Sorey for his first varsity score from 36 yards away. The Lobo defense wasn't done. Ameron Dean pulled down a tipped ball, setting up the Lobos at the Pirate 20-yard line. Chumley then connected for his third touchdown pass in as many attempts, finding a leaping Antonio Carter for a 17-yard score to give the Lobos a 42-7 lead midway through the second quarter. A three-and-out from Pine Tree forced the Pirates to punt. Jakoryian Walker housed the return from 50 yards. Keenan Madden ensured the scoring return with a monster block. The junior added his first interception in the second half. Pine Tree constructed a 13-play, 90-yard march, converting two third downs and a fourth down along the way on the ensuing drive. A 28-yard strike to Hays set up a tough nine-yard score from Bonamy to make the score 49-13 with 18 ticks left in the first half. Junior quarterback Cameron Castleberry hit an open Sorey over the middle and the junior took it 54 yards to paydirt for a 56-13 Lobo lead at the break. Sophomore D'Crayvan Polk added 55 yards on the ground for the Lobos in the second half. Fellow Sophomore Traveion Webster had a 14-yard score with 4:54 left to play, following a 31-yard field goal from Cody Jenkins for the 66-13 final. Chumley finished 6-for-7 passing for 183 yards and three touchdowns in the first half - adding 44 yards on the ground. He did not return to the field in the second half. Miller finished with 104 yards of total offense while Hunter added 33 yards on the ground. Sorey had three catches for 100 yards and the pair of scores. For Pine Tree, Hays finished with 129 yards on seven catches and added 117 yards on kick returns. Bonamy finished with 221 yards on 44 pass attempts. Longview resumes district action at home next Friday, hosting Greenville - a 24-23 winner over Mount Pleasant on Friday - for homecoming. Pine Tree visits Marshall. |
