CHUMLEY SETS SCHOOL RECORD AS LOBOS ROLL, 69-17
LONGVIEW - Longview wasted little time getting its district schedule off and running on Friday night.

The Lobos put up 28-straight points in the first quarter and never looked back, rolling to a 69-17 win over Mesquite in the District 12-5A opener at Lobo Stadium.

Dezmond Chumley threw for five touchdowns, covering 228 yards on 11-for-16 passing. Chumley eclipsed the 200 yard mark for the second-straight week and targeted seven receivers for the second game in a row.

"We threw the ball well and we felt like we would be able to do that against them coming in with their press, man coverage," Longview head coach John King said. "With the receiving corp that we've got, we knew that would be an advantage to our offensive play.

"We had protection, the receivers ran their routes well and Dezmond threw the ball well."

Dorian Leonard pulled down four passes in the contest, with three resulting in points for Longview. The Texas-bound senior had scoring catches of 47, 32 and 12 yards.

JaMycal Hasty scored on a 21-yard run and was on the receiving end of a Chumley pass, which he took 74 yards to paydirt. L'darrius Peterson finished with 94 yards on 10 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown run. Marquies Hunter added 53 on four touches with a three-yard scoring jaunt.

Travin Howard had an interception return for a touchdown for the second-straight week. The senior safety has four on the season.

"He's a special guy - very coachable and is always in the right place at the right time," King said of Howard. "Guys like that make it fun to coach they're fun to be around for the players and the coaches."

Laurent Johnson had a 64-yard scoop-and-score for a touchdown and Zaycoven Henderson - playing in his first game of the season after an injury - recovered a fumble as the Lobo defense held the Skeeters to 155 total yards and without a first down until 4:45 left in the third quarter.

"They did a really good job tonight," King said. "They swarmed the football all night and we added a couple of defensive scores, which is always nice."

Chumley and Leonard connected for the first time on the Lobos opening drive. Howard picked off Mesquite's third snap from scrimmage for a score and the Lobos added two more scores with two minutes off the game clock to take a commanding 28-0 lead with 3:30 left in the first.

Mesquite got on the board with a one-yard run from Robert Blythe, who broke off an 80-yard score on the Skeeters' next possession to cut the defecit to 28-14 with 1:40 to play in the opening half.

Mesquite's Octayvius Miles returned a kickoff 82 yards to the Lobo one but a pair of penalties and an Omar French sack forced the Skeeters to a field goal, which Marco Rodriguez drilled from 31 yards out as time expired in the first half.

Longiew held Mesquite to 59 second-half yards, putting up 232 of their own.

The Lobos will take a 1-0 district record into its bye week but King said that's not going to slow his team down.

"Off to a good start, being 1-0 is always nice, puts you in the drivers seat, three out of the seven teams is 1-0 and we're one of the," King said. "With the off week, hopefully we get over some bumps and bruises and avoid the lull that comes with an open week.

"We've got Heath in Rockwall on the other side so we've got to have a good week to get ready for that."
