COWBOYS RALLY IN 4TH TO BEAT LOBOS
ALLEN - At times Friday night, Longview head coach John King got glimpses of what his young football team is capable of accomplishing.

In the end, the Lobos' inexperience showed up, and the small mistakes cost them.

Trailing 24-12 with 10 minutes left on the clock, No. 10 Coppell posted 20 unanswered points to take a 32-24 win over Longview, spoiling the Lobos' season opener for the second-straight season in the Tom Landry Classic.

"I felt like we did some really good things and we did some boneheaded things," King said. "We had mistakes on both sides of the ball and we've just got to cut out those mistakes."

Junior quarterback Dezmond Chumley passed the century mark in the air in the first half en route to a 228-yard season opener with a pair of touchdowns. Junior JaMycal Hasty finished with 111 yards on the ground, 100 coming in the first half. Texas commit Dorian Leonard had seven catches for 133 yards.

"Dezmond had a great game, he gave us a chance to win it and he had some negative plays that we're going to have to cut out, you take the good with the bad," King said. "He stood in there and threw the ball with the heat coming and the offensive line did a job of protecting him all night."

Defensively, Omar French and Decord Flanagan excelled filling the gaps on the defensive line that returned one starter from last season and is without TCU commit Zaycoven Henderson until mid-October.

The defense held Coppell without a first down until the 1:51 mark in the first quarter with Longview running 21 offensive plays to the Cowboys six.

Coppell pinned the Lobos inside their own five-yard line and forced a quick three-and-out before a high snap resulted in a Longview safety to give Coppell the first points of the contest with 11:06 left in the second.

Travin Howard broke free on the outside and blocked a punt, putting the Lobos on the Coppell 42-yard-line. Jordan Whitaker then pulled down a Chumley pass in the corner of the end zone three plays later to put Longview on the board.

Coppell didn't wait long to respond. Gavin McDaniel brought the ensuing kickoff back 66 yards and Charles West took it in from 31 yards out on the next play, marking the second touchdown in 16 seconds and giving Coppell a 9-7 lead. Coppell also had returns of 58 and 32 yards on special teams.

Andres Perez connected for a 31-yard field goal with four seconds on the clock to give Longview a 10-9 lead at the break.

Stephan Maxey scooped up a Cowboy fumble and took it 21 yards to paydirt midway through the third quarter to push Longview's lead to 17-9.

The Lobo defense held Coppell to a field goal on the next possession after the Cowboys set up first-and-10 at the Longview 17 yard line.

With 8:13 on the clock, Coppell used a halfback pass to find the end zone from nine yards out on fourth down.

The Lobo defense didn't have much time to rest as the Cowboys jumped on an onside kick attempt and recovered it at midfield and used nine plays to score to reclaim their first lead since the second quarter.

Chumley and Leonard connected for a near-40 yard completion that was negated by a hold at the line of scrimmage.

"When you've got the ball, down a point, with three or so minutes left and a big play is erased by a hold, then you're very quickly behind the sticks, a place you don't want to be in that situation," King said. "Having a 12-point lead with eight minutes left and getting beat, that hurts a little bit."

Coppell added their final touchdown with six seconds left on the clock.

Longview travels to Marshall next week and King said that's the Lobos' focus entering Monday's practice.

"We're going to go to work on Marshall, we've got to get some of these small errors corrected," King said. "I don't think our football team deserves a gut check, I think they played with great effort for 48 minutes and I was extremely proud of them.

"We're going to be OK if we can cut out those mistakes."
