| LONGVIEW - Longview didn't have starting running back Tory White on Friday, but the Lobo offense didn't miss a beat.
L'Darrius Peterson ran for 99 yards in his first career start and Dezmond Chumley threw for 144 yards in a 52-6 blowout win over Tyler Lee at Rose Stadium. Longview (6-3, 3-2 District 12-5A) moved within a win of clinching the district's top Division II seed after Rockwall-Heath's 21-14 win over North Mesquite. The Lobos earned their second consecutive win this year and 10th in a row against Lee. The victory was also the Lobos' largest victory over Lee in coach John King's nine-year tenure. "We did what we needed to do," King said. "Got out to an early lead, played good defense, made some big plays on offense and got a commanding lead to halftime, which is what I hoped we could do." Longview outgained the Red Raiders 475-127 and led 31-6 at halftime in cruising to the win. Peterson, senior Damian Russell and Sophomore JaMycal Hasty stepped up in place of White, who missed the game after suffering a concussion last week against North Mesquite. In addition to Peterson's 99 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, Russell ran for 58 yards and two scores on six carries, while Hasty had a 15-yard touchdown run on his only carry. "They ran fine," King said. "I thought our offensive line did a good job opening up some holes and I thought they ran the ball well. Jeremy Powell did a good job blocking for us at fullback and the backs did a good job finding the creases." The Lobos scored twice in a 13-second span late in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. Russell's 2-yard touchdown run gave Longview a 7-0 lead with 39 seconds left in the quarter. Then Tyler Lee fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Lobos Sophomore Jaylon Jackson recovered, setting up Chumley's 36-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Justinn Spady on the next play. Spady finished with six catches for a career-high 108 yards, while Chumley had his fourth consecutive solid game in his fifth career start, completing 10 of 13 passes for the 144 yards and the touchdown. The Sophomore was sharp while playing through the first possession of the second half, benefitting from a strong performance from the offensive line. "He did some good things and had some good protection," King said. "We did try to throw some quick game stuff, a little more than we normally do. The receivers caught the ball well and got some positive yards after the catch." Tyler Lee cut the lead to 14-6 on a fake punt early in the second quarter. Facing fourth-and-two from his own 49, punter Lumi Kaba took the snap and found cornerback Bryce Stewart open for a 51-yard score. Longview reasserted itself quickly, though, increasing its lead to 21-6 on Hasty's 15-yard score on the next drive. Shortly after, Russell added a 3-yard touchdown following a recovered onside kick, then Andres Perez drilled a 28-yard field goal to push the lead to 31-6 at halftime. The Red Raiders struggled to generate any offense outside of the fake punt, finishing with just 126 total yards, including just 75 yards without the trick play. "We knew we had to stop the running game and I thought we did a good job stopping the power toss," King said. "They didn't do that too, too much after they tried it a few tries at it. We knew we had to stop the run and force them to do something they didn't want to do." In the second half, Peterson scored on an 18-yard run, Powell dragged multiple Lee defenders into the end zone for a 16-yard score and backup quarterback Stephon Dunn hit Stephon Anthony for a 29-yard touchdown. Longview will host Rockwall on senior night next week. |
