LOBOS EYEING PLAYOFF WITH 52-3 WIN
LONGVIEW - Dezmond Chumley had another career night on Friday.

But the Sophomore quarterback wasn't alone this week.

Chumley tossed a career-best four touchdowns in the first half and the defense dominated en route to Longview's 52-3 homecoming win over North Mesquite at Lobo Stadium.

With the win, the Lobos (5-3, 2-2 District 12-5A) remain in control of their own destiny to earn the district's top Division II seed for the playoffs.

"It's one game at a time and we're in playoff-mode," Longview coach John King said. "We are in control and we need to take care of our business. I was pleased with how we started the game offensively, then we got stops on defense and turnovers."

Chumley only played the first half and the first series of the second, but completed 8 of 10 passes for 110 yards and the four scores, helping Longview build a 35-0 halftime lead in the blowout win. His strong performance, despite throwing his first varsity interception, came a week after throwing for a career-high 188 yards at Mesquite Horn.

"Things are starting to slow down a little bit for him," King said. "It's not like a new play every time you break the huddle. There's some things there he's comfortable with."

Chumley threw for three touchdowns in the first quarter, hitting Antonius Sanders out of the backfield for a 12-yard score, finding Colin Jeter for a 9-yard touchdown, then lofting a 41-yard bomb to Dorian Leonard, who beat double coverage and adjusted to the ball for his second touchdown catch in two weeks.

Chumley then hit senior Justinn Spady for a 14-yard score on a pass that Spady came back to the ball to grab.

"He threw the ball well, we had good protection and the receivers adjusted to the ball well," King said. "There were a couple throws that weren't on the mark. Spady's and then Dorian made a great catch. But he threw some good balls."

In between touchdown passes, Chumley and the offense benefited from solid field position thanks to North Mesquite miscues. The Stallions (2-6, 1-3) managed just 145 yards of offense and struggled with mistakes all night.

North Mesquite punter Juan Mendez fumbled a snap and was tackled for a 21-yard loss on the Stallions' first possession, a miscue that led to Chumley's pass to Jeter two plays later.

Longview senior safety Corey Bartley intercepted Cody Williams on the next drive, setting up Chumley's touchdown to Leonard. Bartley finished with a career-high three picks, which all led to Lobo touchdowns.

He returned his second interception 87 yards to the North Mesquite 8, setting up Tory White's 2-yard touchdown run just 10 seconds before halftime. His third pick came on the opening drive of the second half and led to L'Darrius Peterson's 5-yard touchdown run, which increased the lead to 42-0.

"That's typical Corey Bartley," King said. "He's going to make plays all over the place. Kicking game, those three picks he had tonight. He's just a headsy football that has a knack for the ball."

The Lobos shut down North Mesquite's run game, allowing just 84 rushing yards. Junior running backs Ta'Varius Luke and Corey Hunt, each ranked in the top seven in the district in rushing entering the game, combined for just 90 yards on 31 carries.

The biggest highlight of the second half might have been the brief brawl that broke out after a pilueup following a short Stallions run during the third quarter.

The fight included several punches thrown by players from both teams, but was broken up quickly. It led to a short coaches' conference with the officials and resulted in Longview junior Zaycoven Henderson and a North Mesquite player being ejected for throwing punches.

"That was typical mouth crap," King said. "Kids are out there jawing, one throws a punch and the other retaliates. Like I told the kids, that's embarrassing when that happens. You need to play football and shut up."

Longview will play at Tyler Lee next week.
