LOBOS FALL TO HORN, 25-17
MESQUITE - Hanby Stadium hasn't been a friendly setting for Longview this season.

Mesquite Horn used a big-play offense and took advantage of a key turnover in the second half to turn a halftime tie into a 25-17 win over the Lobos on Friday.

Longview (4-3, 1-2 District 12-5A) lost its second game in four weeks at Hanby, defeats that dropped the Lobos to a tie for fourth in the 12-5A standings after winning a district title in coach John King's first eight seasons.

"It's a tough loss," King said. "We just didn't play well at times, gave up big plays and couldn't run the football. It's frustrating. I thought our kids battled and had a chance at the end."

Longview Sophomore quarterback Dezmond Chumley completed 12 of 22 passes for a career-high 188 yards and a touchdown, keeping the Lobos within striking distance while senior running back Tory White was held to just 46 yards on 16 carries.

But Chumley also had a key fourth-quarter turnover when Longview had good field position and an opportunity to take the lead.

Trailing 19-17, the Lobos blocked a Horn 42-yard field goal attempt midway through the fourth quarter, one of three Longview blocked kicks in the game. The Lobos took over on their own 49-yard line, but gave the ball back on the next play when Chumley was sacked by a blindside rush and lost a fumble.

"That's one play that stood out to me," King said. "Big blocked kick and we get the ball at midfield. Wish I could get that one back. He had a chance to make a big play and got hit from the blindside. That was a tough one there, but he grew up tonight."

The Jaguars (5-3, 3-1) took advantage of the turnover and the short field, driving 35 yards for a score to push the lead to 25-17 with just 3:39 left.Longview picked up two first downs to move the ball to its 44 on its ensuing drive, but turned the ball over on downs when Chumley was sacked for a 7-yard loss on fourth-and-12.

"It's tough for anybody, whether you're a Sophomore or a senior," King said. "He'll learn from it."

Horn quarterback Destri White keyed the Jaguars all night. The junior finished 13 of 21 for 230 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 109 yards on 19 carries.

White did most of his damage with his legs in the fourth quarter, helping keep Longview at bay. He ran for 75 yards on just nine carries in the quarter on an assortment of options, draws and scrambles.

"They got after us in the second half," King said. "Used some misdirection. They got leverage on us and he's over there running on grass. He would've had to trip and fall to get tackled. We didn't have anybody fit out of the secondary like we should have. We'd get them in third down and we're supposed to have people in certain zones and they're not there. Lack of execution."

Chumley and White traded big-time throws in the first three quarters.

White hit senior receiver Brian O'Bannon for a 77-yard touchdown to put the Jaguars up 10-0, then found O'Bannon again for a 70-yard score on the first drive of the second half to give Horn a 16-10 lead.

In between those touchdowns, Chumley established a connection with junior receiver Dorian Leonard, who finished with six catches for a career-high 129 yards after entering the game with three catches for 62 yards this season.

Chumley found the 6-foot-3 receiver for a 65-yard gain midway through the second quarter. The play was shortened because of a block in the back, but still resulted in 20 yards and paved the way for Leonard to stretch for a 22-yard touchdown pass later in the drive, cutting Longview's deficit to 10-7 late in the first half.

Chumley and Leonard got back to work with less than 90 seconds before halftime after a Horn three-and-out. They hooked up for a 19-yard gain, then Leonard turned a 10-yard pickup into a 38-yard gain to set up Andres Perez' tying 24-yard field goal with three seconds left.

Chumley threw for 111 of his 186 yards in the final two drives of the half.

"He kept drives alive and made some big-time throws," King said. "He got the offense down the field for the field goal at the end of the half."

Longview will host North Mesquite for homecoming next Friday.
