| LUFKIN - Tory White and his Longview teammates accomplished something Friday that the Lobos' state finalist and semifinalist teams in 2009 and 2010 failed to achieve.
White ran for a career-high 232 yards and three touchdowns, leading Longview to a 45-14 win at Lufkin, the Lobos' first win at Abe Martin Stadium since 1997. Longview (3-1) had dropped its previous eight road games against the Panthers (2-2) before Friday, including four games under coach John King. Longview's defense held Lufkin to 236 yards of offense and White was a home-run threat from the start for the Lobos, spearheading an offense that racked up 446 yards, including 321 rushing yards. He exploded untouched through the line and outran Lufkin's defense for a 71-yard score on the Lobos' first play from scrimmage. It was the second consecutive week he scored on Longview's first offensive play after breaking a 37-yard touchdown run against Marshall. White's 4-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter tied the game at 14, then the Lobos broke it open in the second. Andres' Perez' 24-yard field goal put Longview ahead 17-14 early in the quarter and the Lobos struck twice late in the half to build a cushion. Antonius Sanders' 4-yard run capped a 10-play drive and put Longview ahead 24-14 late in the first half. Linebacker DeMarkus Lathan blocked a punt on Lufkin's ensuing possession, setting up the Lobos on the Panthers' 39. Longview took advantage of the field position on the next play when receiver Justinn Spady took a handoff and hit Cedric King in stride in the end zone. King's first catch of the season gave the Lobos momentum and a 31-14 leading heading into halftime. Sophomore quarterback Dezmond Chumley took over midway through the first quarter after starter Stephon Dunn's fumble set up Lufkin's second touchdown. Chumley stayed in the game until late in the fourth quarter, completing 6 of 12 passes for 59 yards while running for 19 yards. Chumley benefited from White's big night on the ground and a Longview defense that limited Lufkin after two first-quarter touchdowns. The Panthers turned the ball over four times and managed just 130 yards after taking a 14-7 lead less than four minutes into the game. Lufkin quarterback Tyler Stubblefield completed just 10 of 22 passes for 60 yards. Cornerback Davatric Cooks and safety Corey Bartley each intercepted Stubblefield, while Longview defenders dropped three more picks. The Panthers also fumbled four times, losing two. Lufkin failed to strike early in the third quarter, then White broke a 32-yard touchdown run up the middle, again outracing the Lufkin defense when he broke into the second level. The score put the Lobos up 38-14 in the third quarter and put White over the 200-yard mark. Bartley ended any Panther comeback hopes when he flashed in front of a Lufkin receiver and returned the interception 23 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter. Longview will start District 12-5A play next week at Mesquite. |
