| LONGVIEW - Longview's football game against Tyler Lee on Friday can be subtitled the Petey and Goosey show. It can also be subtitled the win which put the Lobos in the playoffs.
Petey is Longview quarterback LaDarrin Robertson, and he rushed for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Lobos rallied for a 28-17 win in a District 11-5A game at Lobo Stadium. Robertson put Longview up for good with a one-yard touchdown sneak with 4:22 remaining, capping a 62-yard drive in which the Lobos ran the ball eight straight times, six times by Robertson for 45 yards. Goosey is defensive lineman Joseph Wilson, who combined with linebacker Anthony Wiley for the defensive play of the game after Robertson's touchdown sneak. Wilson pressured Lee quarterback Preston Conder, grabbing a foot to force Conder into an errant pass which Wiley intercepted and returned seven yards to the Lee 17-yard line. Two plays later Robertson ran in from 13 yards to make sure Senior Night for the Lobos was successful. Longview (5-4, 3-1) clinches its 10th consecutive playoff berth and remains in the hunt for a share of the 11-5A title, which the Lobos would earn if they win at DeSoto next Friday. Longview coach John King said the win was especially satisfying because he expressed doubts about whether his team understood what was at stake. "I feel great for these kids and coaches," King said. "It was a tough week." Robertson finished with 99 yards rushing and accounted for 211 total yards and three Longview touchdowns. King said he believed in the Wilson and Robertson. "Goosey just has a knack of getting off the blocks," King said. "In the fourth quarter, we kept making plays to move the ball, but with running the ball we didn't want to get too risky." Lee (1-8, 1-3) can still make the playoffs if they defeat North Mesquite next Friday in Tyler because North Mesquite dropped a 49-21 decision to Mesquite Horn on Friday. Lee was on its way to avoiding this all-the-marbles game in the third quarter. Rallying from a 14-3 halftime deficit, Lee marched 80 yards on its opening drive, capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Conder to LaQuintas Wallace with 6:43 left in the third quarter. Lee took the lead on a trick play with 54 seconds remaining in the third, as Wallace threw a 10-yard option pass back to Conder for a touchdown. "At that point, I just told the kids to keep playing," King said. "Play every down like it's your last. I didn't want them to lose for a lack of effort." Conder finished with 259 total yards. Longview basically held Wallace in check, keeping the Sophomore standout to 55 yards on 20 carries. Lee had a chance to build a double-digit lead early. After a 68-yard run by Conder set up a 30-yard field goal by Lumi Kaba on the game's initial drive, Longview muffed the ensuing kickoff and Lee's Marvin Gray recovered the loose ball at the Longview 13-yard line. Three plays later however, a Conder pass was intercepted in the Longview end zone by Ja'Quale Darden for a touchback. Longview's defense turned the tide of the game the way of the Lobos when they forced Lee receiver Marquise Mosley to fumble. Thomas Jones scooped up the loose ball and ran 34 yards for a touchdown to give Longview a 7-3 lead after one quarter. Longview also had command of the second quarter on a slower pace. The Lobos marched 94 yards on 16 plays, eating up 7:01 on the clock before Robertson threw a five-yard touchdown pass to D'Marjia Devine with 54 seconds remaining in the first half, giving Longview a 14-3 halftime lead. The drive featured a 24-yard screen pass from Robertson to Dakota Anthony, a two-yard sneak by Robertson for first down on a fourth-and-one at the Lee seven-yard line and - most memorably - a lateral to offensive tackle Spencer Borens, who gained nine yards on the play. Robertson was 6-for-9 for 91 yards in the first half while J'Haston Faggans had 51 yards rushing on 11 carries. Faggans finished with 82 yards on 18 carries. Except for Conder's 68-yard run, Lee had 85 first-half yards. Gray led all players with 10 tackles while lineman Bryce Braly had six tackles with three for losses and one sack. Wiley had six tackles with a sack for Longview while Wilson had two tackles for losses. |
