LOBOS HOLD OFF HORN, 13-8
LONGVIEW - Longview linebacker Cameron Jones was able to look briefly into the future on Friday. He sensed that when Mesquite Horn's football team needed two yards, they could only get one against his Lobo teammates and himself.

Jones' hunch was correct, and he arguably had the most important tackle of his career to help preserve Longview's 13-8 win over Horn in a District 11-5A game at Lobo Stadium.

Jones' big play was with 48 seconds remaining. On a fourth-and-two play at the Longview 32-yard line, Horn's Jakeem Grant tried to run for the first down, but was held up by Jones and a pack of Lobos.

Jones yelled and ran with excitement after the play, although there was a measurement. Horn was short by inches.

"I knew they were going to run it because they had been running out of that formation the last two drives. I knew I had stopped him because when I hit him, he went backwards," Jones said. "This is just what the coaches have been telling us in practice. Go hard until the whistle."

Longview (4-3, 2-0) took the lead for good on a 15-yard touchdown run by J'Haston Faggans with 5:58 remaining. This capped a 15-play, 76-yard drive. Faggans finished with 101 yards rushing on 21 carries with two touchdowns.

Faggans winning touchdown came after Horn took an 8-7 lead with 25 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Freshman Horn quarterback Destri White threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Demetris Griffin, then Chase Proctor ran in a two-point conversion on a fake kick.

Those two plays were the only two blemishes on an excellent night for the Longview defense, which held Horn to 223 total yards and nine first downs. Horn's first drive after Faggans' game-winning touchdown was stopped by an interception by Ja'Quale Darden, who returned the pick 14 yards to the Longview 41-yard line with 5:18 remaining. Longview held Horn receiver JaCorey Shepherd, who has verbally committed to the University of Kansas, to 10 yards on three receptions.

"We got decent pressure on their passing game and we played their screens really well. That's the focus of their passing game," Longview coach John King said. "Our offense showed character on the last touchdown drive, but the defense won the game tonight. No doubt."

Horn (4-3, 1-1) was without the services of quarterback Collin Strahan, who was unable to play for the third consecutive game because of a fracture in his right arm.

White and the Horn offense found moving the ball difficult in the first half. Longview's defense allowed just 44 total yards. Horn did not make a first down until halfway through the second quarter, and that drive ended with 6:09 remaining on a Brian Tomlinson interception.

Longview had a 152-44 edge in total yards and an 11-3 advantage in first downs, but the only touchdown of the first half was a 12-yard touchdown run by Faggans with 9:08 left in the second quarter, capping a 72-yard drive. Faggans had 59 yards rushing on nine carries in the first half.

Longview quarterback LaDarrin Robertson finished with 99 total yards, going 9-for-19 passing for 80 yards. Joe Brown had eight tackles for Longview while Jordan Burton had two tackles for losses.

Horn's defense did hold the Lobos to their lowest point total since a 21-7 loss to Allen to open the 2008 season. Horn linebacker Richard Jones had four tackles for losses, including two sacks. Kyle Boyd, who has committed to Iowa State, had eight tackles while defensive lineman Stephon Sanders (committed to SMU) had seven tackles.

Longview hits the road for its next opponent, playing North Mesquite at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
