MARSHALL - Sing ye who will to the greatness of rome, to the grander that was Greece, or to the splender that was Troy, but Longview today is singing praises to a full back who yesterday, serving his first season with the Loboes, carried the ball across the goal line in the final two minutes of play that gave Longview a 6 to 0 victory over the Marshall Mavericks, and changed the name of the untamed Herd.
Unleashing an aerial attack in the final stages of play that netted 55 yards on the Ross to Adams combinations and placing the ball on the two yard line. The Loboes, with Leonard Ray, last year ineligible, carrying the ball, triumphed in the season's opening game at the Central East Texas Fair. Two previous attempts to score by the Loboes proved futile when the Marshall defense strengthened. Kay's try at the extra point failed to sail through the bars.
With the Loboes entering the battle to avenge the defeats administered in former years, the Mavericks were outplayed in every stage of the game, especially when they were in their own territory and two of Murff's punts were blocked. the Mavericks failed to penetrate the 30 yard line of Longview and only once, in the second quarter, was there any large gains made.
The Loboes work in mid-season form and only on the two occasions did Coach Wilkerson change the starting line up. McCreary, on his long end runs, excellent punts, and all-around playing, featured the battle while, Glover, Ray, Adams, Stinchcomb, and Owens played a stellar brand of ball.
Several thousand fans, many from Longview, including the pep squad and the Longview municipal ban, attended the game.
