BIG SECOND HALF LIFTS LOBOS OVER MAVERICKS
MARSHALL - Jhaston Faggans and D.T. Jackson got in the spirit of the 100th football game between Longview and Marshall on Friday. Each Longview Lobo reached their own standard of 100, and then some.

Faggans and Jackson spearheaded a second-half Longview surge, in which the Lobos out-scored Marshall 21-0 on their way to a 31-9 win at Maverick Stadium in the 2010 season opener for both teams and the 100th meeting between the Lobos and the Mavericks in a series which dates back to 1909. Faggans rushed for 118 yards, including a three-yard touchdown with 2:01 left in the third quarter, which started the second-half scoring and gave the Lobos a 17-9 lead. Faggans rebounded from not participating in a scrimmage at Hallsville last week because of a leg injury.

Jackson had three receptions for 109 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown pass from LaDarrin Robertson in the first half. Jackson had a 27-yard reception to set up Faggans' touchdown.

Making his debut as Longview's starting quarterback, Robertson had 234 total yards and directly accounted for two touchdowns.

The win is the 10th straight in the series Longview-Marshall series for the Lobos (1-0). In that stretch, Marshall (0-1) has lost by double digits eight times. For the 2010 game, Longview had a 23-6 edge in first downs and a 409-171 edge in total yards.

The tide of the game turned Longview's way after an incident with 8:00 remaining in the third quarter. After a Longview punt return, a brawl broke out in which both benches cleared. Because of the incident, two players from each team were ejected, and another Longview player would be ejected later in the third quarter because of unsportsmanlike conduct.

After the incident however, the Lobos marched 69 yards on 13 plays, capped by Faggans' touchdown. With 9:41 remaining in the game, the Lobos forced a fumble by Marshall receiver B.J. Hill that was recovered by Longview linebacker Thomas Jones at the Longview 45-yard line. Jones had a big game on defense, which three tackles for losses including two sacks.

Following the fumble recovery, a 27-yard pass from Robertson to Khody Hubbard set up a one-yard touchdown sneak by Robertson with 6:50 remaining, giving Longview a 24-9 lead and practically ending the competitive part of the game.

"I just told them we made mistakes in the first half, players and coaches," Longview head coach John King said. "We just tried to get settled down and go out and play football."

On the initial drive of the game, the Lobos moved 65 yards to set up a 25-yard field goal by Kyle Jenkins. Three plays later, Marshall struck back as Jaquan Kelly burst up the middle for a 77-yard touchdown run with 4:14 left in the first quarter, although Miguel Luna's extra-point attempt was wide right. Kelly led Marshall in rushing for the game with 93 yards on seven carries.

Longview was in danger in falling in a hole on its next possession as Marshall linebacker Quebec Polk stripped the ball from Robertson and recovered the fumble at the Longview 24-yard line. However, the Lobos would avoid falling further behind four plays later as Longview cornerback Jaquale Darden intercepted a Bryce French pass at the Longview nine-yard line.

Marshall expanded its lead to 9-3 with 8:19 left in the first quarter on a 39-yard field goal by Pedro Farnsworth. The field goal was set up by a 29-yard punt return by Alandric Tutt to the Longview 31-yard line.

Longview drove inside the Marshall red zone on its next drive, but on a fourth-and-three at the Marshall 14-yard line, Robertson was stopped by Kelly for a one-yard loss with 4:41 remaining in the second quarter.

Longview's passing game had just two completions on its first eight attempts, but the ninth attempt would give the Lobos a halftime lead. Robertson found Jackson, who out-sprinted the Marshall secondary for his 72-yard touchdown reception, giving the Lobos a 10-9 edge with 1:15 remaining in the first half.

Faggans ran strong in the first half with 71 yards on 12 carries. Longview had an 11-3 edge in first downs and a 225-113 edge in total yards in the first half.

Longview plays its first home game of the 2010 season against John Tyler this Friday while Marshall hosts Shreveport (La.) Huntington.
