| LONGVIEW - The script was pretty much the same for the fifth week in a row.
Patlaying their super back Earnest Hunter, while capitalizing on three Dragon mistakes, the Longview Lobos kept their season record unblemished rolling to a 42-7 romp over Nacogdoches Friday night at Lobo Stadium. Longview, which moved into the Associated Press' schoolboy poll at No. 10 this week, improves to 6-0 for the year and 3-0 in District 13-5A. Nacogdoches drops to 3-3, 1-2. Hunter continued his climb towards the 1,000 yard mark with 141 yards rushing on 18 carries. He also crossed the goal line four times on runs of 11, 46, 3 and 9 yards. The senior tailback has now ground out 828 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. But Hunter was not the only star of the contest as the defense and specialty teams played an important role. The Lobos forced five Dragon turnovers - three interceptions, one fumble and a blacked punt - scoring three times. In the process, cornerback Selwyn Broughton picked off his eighth pass of the year to set a new school record and Bobby Taylor collected his third blocked punt. Hunter, as he has since the second week of the season, scored three times in the first half to give Longview a 28-7 advantage heading into intermission. The 5'10, 200-pound runner's first score culminated a 6-play, 28-yard drive following a dropped snap by Dragon Punter Mitch Ashley deep in Nacogdoches territory. Hunter strolled in from 11 yards out with 7:48 to play. Broughton's record-setting interception put Longview back on offense one series later as he wrestled the ball away from Dragon receiver Jamie Simon. On the third play from scrimmage, back-up fullback Michael Reedy came over from his starting linebacker position for a 64-yard touchdown run. Dean Malone's point after pushed Longview's lead to 14-0 at the 5:17 mark. The Dragons did make a game of it but only briefly. Starting at their own 21, they drove 79 yards in 12 plays as Derrick Fields scored on a 3-yard run to cut the deficit in half with 33 seconds left in the opening quarter. Nacogdoches benefited from 38 yards in penalties called on Longview. The first for roughing the passer, gave the Dragons new life after an incomplete pass would have forced fourth down deep in their own territory. If there was bad side to Longview's victory, it would be the 10 penalties of 101 yards called against he Lobos. In the past two weeks, they've been whistled for 205 yards. After holding Longview on downs, the Dragons again worked their way back down the field for the would-be tying score. But the drive would only reach the Lobos' 29 as they turned the ball over on downs. Hunter finally broke the game open with a 45-yard explosion on a second-and-one play with 6:28 remaining before halftime. An interception by weak safety Reggie Adams then sealed Nacogdoches' fate as he picked off a Jeff Sammons pass at midfield and returned it to the 13-yard line. Two plays later, Hunter scored on a 3-yard burst up the middle. Hunter's final touchdown, a 9-yard run, came with 4:40 to play in the third quarter. Longview closed out the scoring on a 2-yard run by Jason Dodson with 11:07 left in the game. Kyle Cook kicked the extra point. The touchdown was set up by Taylor's block of Ashley's punt. |
