TEXTBOOK EXECUTION SLAYS THE DRAGONS
NACOGDOCHES - Ronnie Hunter, making his first start of the season, and Gahlen Johnson proved to be a two-man wrecking crew on offense and the Longview defense proved to be way too much to handle as the Lobos pounded out a 33-0 win over Nacogdoches here Friday night in the District 14-AAAAA opener for both schools.

Hunter, subbing for a slightly injured Clifford Ward, carried the ball 25 times for 125 yards and three touchdowns and Johnson added 132 on just 17 carries to spark a Lobo offense which ran over, around and through the Golden Dragons for 340 yards rushing and 402 total yards en route to the win, Longview's third in four games this season. Nacogdoches, bottled up just about on every play, finished the night with just 37 total yards, but was held to a minus 5 on the ground.

End Glenn Collier led the Lobos' defensive charge, which allowed tailback Hubert Douglas just 8 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Greg Matthews was saddled with 16 yards in losses on eight attempts.

The Lobos had 24 first downs, while 'Doches could manage just three - only one in the second half, that coming by way of a penalty.

Longview, ahead by just a 14-0 margin at the intermission, wasted little time in adding to that margin when the second half began. A short kickoff went to Randy Durden, who bobbled the ball, which was recovered by Kenny Frazier at the Dragons' 20.

Three plays later Hunter moved in from 4 yards out, following a Johnson 16-yard gainer to that point, with 10:39 still left in the third period. Jon Rosborough tacked on the extra point for a 21-0 lead.

'Doches could not move on the ensuing possession and had to punt after three cracks at the Longview defense netted just two yards.

Set up at the Dragons' 48, Johnson picked up 2, then 4 to the 42, but a 15-yard holding penalty moved the Lobos back to their own 43. Quarterback Zane Butter picked up 12 in a scramble, but a 15-yard penalty was tacked on for a personal foul and Longview had a first down at the Dragons' 30.

Johnson picked up a first down three plays later, then added 14 and 2 to put the ball at the 5, where three plays later Hunter took it in for his third score of the night for a 27-0 lead.

The last Longview touchdown of the night came with 5:54 remaining in the game when Ward, who rushed for 16 yards in a token appearance, took a pitch left but saw no room to run and reversed his field and outran two Dragon defenders for the score.

The drive, which covered 65 yards in seven plays, was set up by a Jeff Head interception.

Two first half Longview scoring drives worked just like the drawing board shows. Good, clean, crisp blocking, alert running and excellent execution.

The Lobos, without going to the air, moved methodically down the field on their first possession of the game. Butter capped a 75-yard march on the 10th play of the march when he bootlegged, untouched, around the right end for an 11-yard gain and the score with 7:41 still left. Rosborough tacked on the point after for a quick 7-0 lead.

Although Hunter accounted for 44 of the necessary yards, key plays came from Johnson, who got loose for gains of 9 and 11 yards. Only one time did Longview go to a third down play in the drive, that being on Butter's scoring run.
