LOBOS MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY, 48-0
LONGVIEW - Sizzling Longview's Lobos beat a happy path to Palestine's goal line, scored a normal year's quota of touchdowns on this cool Friday night and murdered wilting Palestine in a District 14-AAAA contest.

The scoreboard smiled down 48 to 0 when it was finally done and over with.

The 48 points are the most in Longview football against Palestine since the Wildcats became a member of District 14-AAAA in 1968. In 1971, in Lobo Stadium, the Longview team beat Palestine 41 to 7. In the first game of the series in 1968 the Lobos won, 36 to 0.

Coach Clint Humphreys' teams have now beaten the Wildcats three straight years, 41 to 7 (1971), 28 to 0 (1972), and 48 to 0 (1973). This will most likely be the last year for these two schools to meet since Palestine will be moving down to Class AAA next fall.

"We played all our players but two," Coach Humphreys said Saturday morning as he viewed the film of the game. "Jackie James and Jerry Bobo were the only players we kept out of the game."

Bobo, who is the team's kickoff specialist, was on the sick list and missed action. Mike Mock took over the kickoffs and nearly worked himself to death as kicked off eight times.

James, 190-pound seniors, plays offensive right guard and defensive right end for the Lobos. He is nursing a sore left knee. However, it is believed that he will be able to start against Nacogdoches on Friday night.

"I was real proud the way our reserves played Friday night," Coach Humphreys pointed out. "They really enjoyed themselves. The boys work hard and we like to see them all see some action on Friday night."

Split end Keith Pittman, 175-pound junior, injured his right knee on the final play of the third quarter and may be sidelined for the Nacogdoches game Friday night. "We will know more about the condition of his knee on Monday," says trainer Bobby Briscoe.

Coach Humphreys was well pleased with the quarterback of Steve Gaddis, 150-pound junior. Gaddis started his third game of the season for the Lobos. "He handles the ball well and his leadership is improving," he noted. "Steve is going to make us a fine quarterback. This will be one position we will not have to fill next year."

The Lobo coaches were happy with the defensive unit. The Lobos held Palestine to two first downs rushing, two passing and two via penalties for a total of six first downs. Palestine had 19 net yards rushing and 45 passing for a total of 64 yards. Quarterback Bobby Alexander completed only four of 17 passes and had two passes intercepted. Steve Taylor and Scott Cole intercepted one pas each.

Longview compiled 23 first downs rushing, two passing and one via a penalty for a total of 26 first downs. Longview rushed for 389 yards and a had 41 yards passing for a total of 430 yards. Longview quarterback Gaddis completed two of three passes for 41 yards and passed for one touchdown. The touchdown pass went to Ricky Watts that covered 22 yards.

Tailback Mike Mock saw a limited amount of action against Palestine. However, he gained 109 on 14 tries for a 7.7 yards average. His longest run was for 30 yards. Fullback Elbert Hoyt, 170-pound junior, had 91 yards on 18 tries for a 5.0 yards average. Hoyt showed his power and great moves against the Wildcats. Fans can expect to see this youngster carrying the ball a lot more this fall. Tailback Bobby Hunter had 60 yards on seven tries. Fullback Danny Majors had four tries and 46 yards. Majors spent most of the night on defense at linebacker.

The Lobos had 64 rushing plays for 389 yards for a 6.0 yards average. Palestine had only 27 rushing plays for a net of 19 yards.

Longview's first touchdown of the night came when quarterback Steve Gaddis hit wingback Ricky Watts on a 22-yard pass in the end zone with 6:30 remaining on the clock in the first quarter. Mike Mock kicked the extra point and the Lobos led, 7 to 0. The Lobos started the drive at their own four yard line. On the second play at the seven, the Lobos were issued a four yard penalty and the ball was moved back to the three yard line. So the Lobos in the drive really went 97 yards in 12 plays for the touchdown.

The second touchdown of the contest was scored on a 12 yard run by quarterback Gaddis around the left side of the line. Mock kicked the extra point, 14 to 0, with 4:35 on the clock in the first quarter.

Tailback Bobby Hunter went over left guard from five yards out for the third Longview touchdown with 11:55 on the clock in the second quarter Mock's extra point kick was good and the Lobos led, 21 to 0.

Tailback Mike White scored from the one yard line over left guard with 24 seconds left in the second quarter. Mock kicked the extra point, 28 to 0.

Corner back John Fuller, 150-pound Sophomore, returned a Palestine punt 60 yards for a Lobo touchdown. John, a well talented athlete, took the punt at the Lobo 40 yard line. He went to his right and headed down the sideline with excellent blocking by a host of Lobos. Mock kicked the extra point, and the Lobos led, 35 to 0, with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter.

Fullback Danny Majors couldn't be stopped by the Wildcats as he went 19 yards for a Lobo touchdown with 6:51 left in the third quarter. Mock missed the extra point. It was his first miss of the '73 season.

Tailback Bobby Hunter scored his second touchdown of the night on a 19-yard run around the left side of the line. Mock kicked the extra point, 48 to 0, with 2:00 left in the third quarter.

The Lobos used two quarterbacks against the Wildcats, Steve Gaddis and Charles Robe. Both turned in fine jobs.
