LOBOS ROLL PAST HOUSTON SMILEY, 15-0
HOUSTON - There are a few places Steve Judy could not win a popularity contest - the latest of which is Houston Smiley High School.

The Longview Lobos just couldn't have gotten along here Friday night without ace signal caller Judy. The talented field general guided the Lobos to a 15-0 victory over the M.B. Smiley High School Eagles in Jones-Cowart Stadium before a large crowd.

The victory was number two for the Lobos and it was the third straight loss for the Eagles. The Lobos kicked off the season with a 27-0 victory over lowly Dallas Adamson and last Friday night at Arlington played the colts to a scoreless tie, 0-0.

The big win here Friday night should give the Lobos that needed spirit this coming week in making ready for the powerful Woodrow Wilson Wildcats of Coach Cotton Miles. No Lobo football player or fan have forgotten last year's game as the 'Cats posted a 48 to 6 score.

The Eagles opened the season with Houston La Marque and were defeated 10-7, and last week's game saw Texas City blank the Eagles, 18-0.

Quarterback Judy did everything in the "football book" a field general can be asked to do by the coaching staff and fans. He ran, passed and scored the Lobos to one of their better games in a long, long time. It seemed that each Lobo carried a "good luck" charm around their necks.

The Lobos scored touchdowns in the first and second quarter and in the third quarter Keith Parker booted a field goal to give the Longview team their second victory of the early season.

The Lobos, ranked 10th by the Dallas Morning News this week, showed lots of hustle in all four quarters. In the closing minutes of the contest the coaching staff played lots of reserves.

Quarterback Judy and split end Cecil Newton had one of their finest games in the passing and receiving departments.

The Lobos took the opening kickoff by tailback Rodney Hill, 152-pound junior, on the 15 and returned to the 30 before he was grounded.

Quarterback Judy barking the signals guided the Lobos to the 38 yard line of Smiley before punter Cecil Newton was called upon to boot the ball out. The Lobos had recorded two first downs on the drive, one by rushing and the other through the air. Tailback David Majors on the first carry plowed up the middle of the Eagles for seven yards and took a few feathers off as he pushed his way. On the next play Judy's pass went over the head of the receiver. Then Majors took the handoff from Judy for six yards and a first down.

Newton punted to the Lobos on the 38 of Smiley and the pigskin went into the end zone. From the 20, the Eagles oiled their offensive unit and on the first play fancy stepper wingback Jerry Smith, 158-pound Sophomore, broke through the Lobo defensive wall and before the Lobos could look up the talented little runner had gained to the 34-yard line of Longview for a gain of 41 yards.

From the 34, fullback Van Johnson took the old ball to the 31 and then quarterback Steve Redd went to the air and hit split end Don Kelley, 186-pound senior, for a nine yard pass.

The Lobo defensive unit voted to go to work and they did just that as the Eagles were forced to give the ball over to Longview on fourth down and needed six for a first on the Lobo 18 yard line. Quarterback Redd's pass to end Kelley sailed too high for Kelley to catch and the Lobos took over.

The Lobos found the offensive unit of Smiley tough for two plays as Hill was pushed back for a loss of one yard back to the 19. The next play saw Judy give the ball off to Majors and he was nailed to the turf at the 19 for no gain. On the next big play, quarterback Judy found a narrow tunnel between the forwards and broke loose for an 82 yard run to the goal line for Longview's first touchdown. It was third down and the Lobos needed 11 for a first when Judy took the snap from center Chad Barnwell.

Judy's sparkling gallop shook the fans nearly out of the stadium and the small crowd of Lobo fans went wild with cheers.

Parker's kick for the extra point failed with 3:15 left on the clock in the first quarter.

Tailback Rodney Hill on a 40-yard sprint scored the second Lobo touchdown of the night 7:42 on the clock in the second quarter. Judy's pass for the two pointer was blocked.

The touchdown was set up when the Eagles were forced to punt and the Lobos took over on Longview's 44.

The big gainer was a 17 yard pass from Judy to Newton to the 38 yard line. Judy hit Keith Parker on a five yard gainer to the 40. Then from the 40, Hill took over and the run was good for six points.

Keith Parker booted a 30-yard field goal with 2:34 left in the third quarter to give Longview a 15-0 victory.

The field goal was set up when Kenny Kimbrough intercepted a pass from quarterback Steve Redd on the 34 yard line.
