BULLDOGS SCORE THREE TIMES IN 2ND QUARTER TO WIN, 20-0
LONGVIEW - The Kilgore Bulldogs, fourth-ranked Class AAA eleven in Texas, utilized an alert defense, the smashing drives of fullback Buddy Humphrey and halfback larry Hickman and the slick passing of southpaw quarterback Larry Cummings to score three touchdowns in the second quarter and defeat the Longview Lobos before a crowd of 6,500 here Friday night, 20-0.

The loss, first for Longview one win in District 4-AAA play, knocked the Lobos out of a share of the conference lead while the triumph kept alive the chances of the well-polished Bulldogs in the championship race. It was their fifth victory over the full season route, their second in conference completion and left them still undefeated, although the Bulldogs have a scoreless tie with the Marshall Mavericks in a district game on their record.

The defeat was not without honor for the underdog Longview eleven. After Kilgore struck for three touchdowns with almost lightning-like rapidity in the second quarter the Lobos appeared almost on the verge of a complete annihilation at the intermission, but rallied their forces in the second half to make a remarkable recovery and more than held their own with the heavily-favored Bulldogs during the final two periods.

Tempers flared briefly several times during the hard-fought contest and late in the game, Milton (Hink) Cabbiness, Longview guard, was ejected when he squared off against Jack Morgan, Kilgore guard.

Hickman, an outstanding candidate for all-state backfield honors, was used sparingly by the Bulldogs as a result of a bruised rib suffered in last week's game with Gladewater, but his running was highly effective the few times he carried the ball. He set up one touchdown with a 15-yard scamper around end and booted two extra points.

Alvin McCarty, 155-pound Kilgore guard, probably did more damage to the Longview cause than any other player on the field as he recovered one fumble by the Lobos and intercepted two passes that resulted in touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

The first quarter was scoreless, although late in the period Kilgore launched a 48-yard drive that ended in the first touchdown for the Bulldogs on the second play of the second period. The winners took a punt on Longview's 48-yard stripe and required only ten plays to strike pay dirt. On the final play of the opening quarter Hickman blazed 15 yards around right end to Longview's one and in two smashes at the center of the line Humphrey went over for a touchdown.

The try for extra point failed when Cummings fumbled the snap from center and Hickman piked up the ball and tried to circle end, but was nailed behind the line of scrimmage.

Late in the second quarter McCarthy intercepted a pass and returned it four yards to Longview's 49. This time the Bulldogs needed just three plays to negotiate the necessary distance. Cummings flipped a 22-yard aerial to Don Holley and Hickman picked up eight around right end before Cummings fired a 19-yard pass to end Jere Nichols, who stepped into the end zone with a minute and 57 seconds left in the half. Hickman converted from placement to put Kilgore ahead, 13-0.

Four plays after the following kickoff McCarthy intercepted another Longview pass and returned it 12 yards to the Lobos' 20. With only 25 seconds left to play in the half Cumming passed 12 yards to Holley for a touchdown. Hickman again converted.
