LOCALS POST IMPRESSIVE WIN OVER DENISON, 24-0
DENISON - A well-balanced Longview Lobo team smothered coach Les Cranfill's Denison Yellowjackets 24 to 0 here tonight as the Wolves turned on the power early int he game for two touchdowns and then scored pretty much when hey felt like it thereafter. The smallest crowd ever to see a Cranfill-coached team here, about 2,800, saw the battling Yellowjackets go down without showing anything like a scoring punch.

The Wolves scored twice in the first period to take complete charge early. A quick kick by Sonny Jones which travelled 75 yards was the result of Longview's getting the ball the first time. The next time they got it they tallied.

The Lobos kicked off to the Jackets and after three plays Denison kicked to the Lobo 25. On the firs play from scrimmage Jones kicked 75 yards, the ball dying on the one-foot line. Griffin kicked out to Dick Nash on the 35 and he turned it to the Jacket 21. Ronnie Lemmons hit right guard for 10 and a first down on the 11. He picked up six more around right end. Jones carried it for another first down to the one foot line and then hit left guard for the score. Jones converted and the Lobos led 7 to 0.

The Wolves drove 80 yards for the second tally. Taking another out-of-bounds kick on their 20 they rolled to the 32 on two drives by Lemmons, then after a first down on the Lobo 42, Lemmons took a pitchout and spurted left end for 21 and a first down on the Denison 38. A penalty and a loss by Jones put it on the Jacket 47. From there Jones faded back slowly, hit Judd McRee with a pass on the 35 and McRee outran the defendant to the goal. Jones converted for a 14-0 lead.

After a statue-of-liberty play soured for the Wolves and the Jackets recovered the fumble on the Lobo 35, the Jackets tried four plays to no avail and the Lobos took over on downs on their 45.

In the second quarter they Wolves pulled a daisy. After a Lobo punt was returned to the Denison 36 on third down. Billy Shaw, Lobo tackle, stole the ball from Wilkinson and ran it to the Jacket 20. After a first down on the 10, the Wolves were thrown back to the 17 in the plays and the ball went over to the Jackets on their 16.

Another Lobo threat late in the first half ended as Matthews fumbled and Lane covered for the Jackets on the 21.

The score was 14-0 at the half.

The Lobos flubbed a chance to score in the third quarter when Judd McRee recovered a fumble on the Jacket 22. The Wolves punched the ball down the one before yielding it on downs.

The succeeding kick was taken on the Denison 43. Matthews flipped one to Horaney who ran out to the five, where he was knocked out of bounds. A penalty put the ball back on the 10 but Jones, standing on his 22, calmly kicked a field goal straight through the bars and the Wolves led 17 to 0.

A Denison fumble midway through the fourth quarter led to the third Lobo touchdown. The Wolves recovered on the Jacket eight and on second down Kenneth Smith cracked right guard from the three to score. Gerald Reynolds converted to end the scoring.

The Jackets made their initial first down from scrimmage after the Wolves finished scoring. Jones intercepted a long desperation pass on the Lobo 20 to end the last-minute scoring drive of the Jackets. The Wolves had possession of the ball after the interception when the game ended.

Longview completely outclassed the home club in all phases of play wracking up 17 first downs to 3. They gained 141 yards to 32 rushing and 110 to 27 through the air.

Jones, Nash, Horaney, Lemmon, Matthews, Yeach and Huff all looked good in the backfield for the Lobos. McRee and Shaw played fine defensive fall and McRee's pass snatching also gave the fans something to talk about.

Duggan stuck out like a sore thumb on the Jacket team but he also had plenty of help from several others on defense.
