LOBOS SHOW EFFECTS OF TRAINING IN FIRST GAME
LONGVIEW - Coach "Pete" Shotwell's charges showed he effect of intensive training and promise as they ran almost at will against the Nacogdoches Dragons to run up a 43 to 0 score.

Though the visitors showed little in the way of an offense, much of that can be credited to the hard charging Lobo forward wall, with McGaw, Hibben, Christenberg, Gooding and Broussard bearing the brunt of the work on defense, with McGaw a standout.

Aycock, Rowland and Dill showed up well offensively, with the former's ability to find holes in the Dragon's lineup, aided his team considerably.

These three boys aided by Young and later by B. Moore ripped the Nac line from end to end as they mounted up a total of 313 yards, seven of which were lost on an attempted lateral. Three more when left end Blount broke through to throw Rowland for a loss.

Art, only regular left from last year, scored four touchdownsthe best of which was his 37 yard break through right guard for a score at the start of the third quarter.

Aycock's two touchdowns were fine examples of quick thinking for on the first one with the ball on the Nac 20, he was about to lateral when Sandlin broke through and caught his arm, the ball flying back to the 32 yard line, but Abie tore back quickly..picked up the bobbling oval and scooted down the right sideline for a touchdown.

His other, just before the game ended, gave the 5,000 opening game crowd its biggest thrill. Shifter, visiting punter, kicked from his own 38 to the Longview 27, and again Aycock picked up the partially stopped pigskin and headed down the right side line to pay dirt for a 73-yard jaunt.

Coach Shotwell's modification of the single wing formation, with the quarterback handling the ball crunched up back of center, enables him to use many play similar to those used with the highly popular "T" setup, but still giving an added blocker on the strong side. The boys carried out his plans well Friday night, though stiffer opposition may bring out a weakness or two in the lineup.

Next Friday the Lobos travel to Port Arthur. In their last meeting in 1942, Longview was defeated 13 to 6. This game will do much toward showing local fans the real possibilities potentially present in the Lobo squad.
